Discover the New Smatrix Pulse Wireless Radiant and Air-Side Control System
Smatrix Pulse is the newest innovation from Uponor, capable of precise comfort control in every room of a home for both radiant and forced-air systems.
This revolutionary system offers precise wireless control of radiant floor heating as well as forced-air heating and cooling systems, all with one solution that connects to a smart home assistant and can also be controlled remotely via an app.
Mechanical
Let’s move to the basement! Depending on whether it’s a new build or a remodel, there is an Uponor radiant system ideal for the application.
Welcome to the brains of your operation. Since Smatrix Pulse is a wireless zoning control system designed for radiant heating and cooling and forced-air integrations, this is the central hub for the home’s operation. The mechanical room will include a Smatrix PulseController, a Smatrix Pulse Communication Module, thermostats, actuators, and wireless relays.
Note that keeping a home to one or two installation methods will simplify installation, start-up, and operation, and in most cases, keep first costs to a minimum.

With many people now spending time in their homes as both a workplace and a residence, this lifestyle shift has launched a focus toward healthier, more sustainable homes.
Now, homeowners are considering the total indoor environmental quality (IEQ) of a home, from indoor air to lighting to acoustics to comfort. And when it comes to IEQ, there is one home heating solution that far exceeds the requirements of a quality indoor environment — it’s radiant heating.

The Smatrix Pulse Controller manages the actuator operation when the thermostats detect a demand for heating and/or cooling. Where the mechanical room is the brains of the operation, the Controller is receiving the signal. The Smatrix Pulse Controller will sense any temperature dips and connect to the other components of the Smatrix Pulse system to set off a reaction. With the Smatrix Pulse system, you can connect to eight radiant zones with the Communication Module. That means the kitchen, family room, primary bedroom, and basement can all be individually controlled for optimal comfort.

The Smatrix Pulse Controller, which is typically located near the system manifolds in the mechanical room, can operate up to six thermostats and eight actuators. The actuators are the “movers” of the system, and they respond to the signal from the Controller to heat up the radiant zones. The Smatrix Pulse system reduces the peak power needs and energy usage, too. While eight actuators can be opened at the same time, the Smatrix Pulse system queues them up and opens them chronologically for increased energy efficiency.

Smatrix Pulse Relay Modules are handy for connecting to a conventional forced-air system with air conditioning or a fan coil to one of the thermostats in the Smatrix Pulse system. They are also helpful for wiring back to the mechanical room when a zone pump in a garage application is an issue. Wireless relays provide installation flexibility in retrofit radiant projects with air conditioning units, as it adds the two extra output relays for additional output options.

Smatrix Pulse includes one or multiple Controllers, an optional Communication Module (for Internet and smart home connectivity), an Antenna (for systems without Internet or smart home connectivity), an Expansion Module, a Relay Module, Digital Thermostats, Mini Sensors, and Actuators. The Controller receives data from the Digital Thermostats and/or Mini Sensors to operate actuators based on system parameters. One Controller can operate up to six (6) thermostats and eight (8) actuators. An Expansion Module adds an additional six (6) thermostats and six (6) actuators.

Other smart thermostats aren’t designed specifically for radiant heat, which means there is a potential limit on zones from the same IP address.

Simply adhere the mats to the concrete slab or wood subfloor and press the pipe between the knobs (either by foot or by hand). After the pipe is installed, it is then covered with a lightweight gypsum overpour to create a smooth, solid surface for the flooring.

This solution is ideal for homes with unfinished basements, because the aluminum panels can be secured under the subfloor between the joists. These panels drive the heat energy to the desired area and are easy to access without impacting the floor height. (Note that this solution is not ideal if there’s no easy access to the subfloor.)

Aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat, so using Joist Trak™ aluminum heat-transfer plates is an effective way to install a high-performing radiant floor heating system when installation on the surface of the floor is not an option. The plates fasten to the underside of the subfloor between the joists and feature a channel down the middle where the piping locks into place. Note that after installation, it is important to add a minimum R-11 fiberglass insulation into the joist bay snug against the plates to prevent downward heat loss.

The maximum distance through typical building construction materials is 98 ft. (30 m) from the Controller. And with the system’s unique autobalancing feature, customers can enjoy faster system reaction times for more immediate comfort along with greater energy savings. This is because Smatrix Pulse is constantly learning and gathering data from inside and outside the home to provide optimal comfort and energy efficiency.

Kitchen

Xpress Trak™ is the newest radiant panel system from Uponor that provides a reliable solution for maximum comfort and fast response times. Made of lightweight XPS foam and laminated with a thin sheet of aluminum, Xpress Trak is a moisture-resistant solution that keeps spaces like basements dry and offers exceptional heat-transfer capability. Best of all, the low 5/8“ profile requires minimal change to floor heights, making it ideal for home remodels.

Featuring XPS foam laminated with aluminum for a lightweight solution with exceptional heat–transfer capabilities, Xpress Trak™ is the newest radiant panel system from Uponor. With a low profile and compressive strength of 49 psi, Xpress Trak is ideal for spaces like basements where homeowners prefer a lower floor profile and a retrofit application. With straight runs and return bends already molded into the panel, Xpress Trak eliminates the need to staple down piping, and its natural moisture barrier also eliminates the need to caulk edges or grooves, increasing productivity on each job.

Bathroom
While radiant solutions are typically installed in floors, radiant can be installed within a shower to keep the room warmer, and even behind a bathroom mirror to prevent the glass from fogging. While a typical radiant install would have in-floor radiant as the primary application, there are opportunities to explore with secondary or tertiary applications on different walls.

Quik Trak is ideal for areas where homeowners are looking to preserve every inch of floor-to-ceiling height with only ½” impact, and it eliminates the need for a secondary overpour process like Fast Trak. It is also ideal for spaces where the whole level won’t be activated with radiant heat if it’s only in a primary bathroom or kitchen.

With a thickness of only ½”, Quik Trak® radiant wood panels are an ideal solution for remodel and retrofit applications. The panels simply fasten to the plywood subfloor and feature a groove down the center for the piping placement. An aluminum sheet on the bottom of the panel increases the heat transferability. This method offers several advantages in addition to the minimal increase in floor height, including no moisture from concrete overpours and increased BTU output potential over joist heating.

Embedded tubing secured to foam is ideal for garages. In new builds, embedded radiant heating in the garage takes the edge off on cold winter days and can melt snow and ice off vehicles. These systems make garages comfortable year-round and are often a homeowner’s favorite part of their project. Since heat energy is stored in the concrete slab instead of a forced-air system, opening the garage door means the heat sticks around longer.

Single-zone snow melt controls feature a microprocessor and sensor to effectively melt snow and ice from exterior surfaces. They also include a universal sensor and outdoor air sensor and outdoor air sensor for basic control and operation. That means your system works hard so you don’t have to.

With the Single-Zone Snow Melt Control, homeowners can use a sensor that measure the moisture and temperature of your driveway. You’ll be shoveling less as your driveway senses when it needs to warm up snowfall.
